BURTON, MI — Some movie theaters in mid-Michigan are gearing up to welcome customers back this week with a Free Family Film Festival and comedy night.

NCG Cinema movie theaters in Genesee, Shiawassee and Lapeer counties are scheduled to reopen on Friday, Oct. 9.

Recently, Gov. Gretchen Whitmer signed executive orders that gave movie theaters and other indoor venues the green light to reopen after being shuttered for months due to coronavirus concerns.

The movie theaters are hosting a Free Family Film Festival during the month of October with titles like Trolls, Hotel Transylvania, The Croods, and Casper. Tickets will be free, and all showtimes will be at 10 a.m. Friday through Sunday.

Additionally, NCG Cinema theaters will show some classic comedy titles like The Hangover, Tommy Boy, and 40 Year Old Virgin. Showtimes are scheduled for 7 p.m. Friday and Saturday nights, which will also be free.

The COVID-19 pandemic halted many plans like movie and TV productions, however, the theater is expecting to show some new releases, according to NCG Cinema Marketing Director Tim Dilts.

“There are several new releases that we are excited to share with our customers over the next few months,” Dilts said. “Some movies have moved their release dates but we will continue to be innovative to create an amazing moviegoing experience at NCG.”

When customers visit, they can also take advantage of the “welcome back combo.” With a purchase of two large drinks and one large popcorn, customers will get a free candy, according to a press release from NCG Cinema.

Along with other venues, the theaters are enforcing special guidelines and procedures. Customers will be required to wear a face mask when in common areas such as the lobby, hallways, and restrooms. They may be removed when eating, drinking, or while seated for the movie. Seating arrangements will also follow all social distancing protocols. Groups must be at least six feet apart. If customers come with family, they may sit together, but respect others and maintain a healthy social distance of two seat spaces, according to the NCG Cinema website.

The following is a list of theaters local to Genesee County:

  • NCG Grand Blanc at Trillium, 8220 Trillium Circle Ave.
  • NCG Lapeer, 1650 DeMille Road.
  • NCG Owosso, 314 E. Comstock.

“We are excited that the moviegoing experience is open once again at NCG Cinema,” Dilts said. “We are dedicated to providing a safe, clean, and enjoyable moviegoing experience.”
