Prince Harry Goes on the Offensive in First Look at 'Oprah With Meghan and Harry' - Decider

CBS has released the first footage from Oprah Winfrey‘s hugely hyped March 7 interview with Meghan Markle and Prince Harry and the tragic legacy of Princess Diana weighs heavily on the conversation. While the two-hour no-holds-barred interview is focused on Meghan, Duchess of Sussex, it will likely be Prince Harry’s comments that draw attention. In one clip, he says he “can’t begin to imagine what it must have been like” for his mother, Princess Diana, and in the other, he literally says, “My biggest concern was history repeating itself.”

Since Prince Harry and Meghan Markle stepped down as full-time royals last year, there’s been a flurry of media speculation and nasty gossip about what drove the young couple’s decision to break with the traditions of the crown and move to Montecito, California. While the Duke and Duchess of Sussex have remained largely mum, they are breaking their silence in a two-hour primetime event next Sunday, March 7. Oprah With Meghan and Harry is an exclusive two hour conversation between Winfrey and the Sussexes. What they will talk about has been a subject of much speculation…until now.

Winfrey says in one of the two clips, “I just want to make it clear to everybody that there’s no subject that’s off-limits.” While we get a sense that Markle will describe the situation as “almost unsurvivable,” we only really hear from her husband, Prince Harry. Harry doubles down on his comments on this past week’s The Late Late Show with James Corden, suggesting that he spurred the move away from Great Britian. He even bluntly says, “My biggest concern was history repeating itself.”

That “history” of course is the tragic story of his mother, Princess Diana, who was so hounded by the press that she was literally killed in a car accident caused by speeding paparazzi. Of course, Diana didn’t just have to struggle through intense scrutiny. As this past Golden Globe-nominated season of The Crown showed, Diana also faced a host of personal demons, exacerbated by the pressures of being a royal.

Harry evokes his mother’s struggles when he tells Winfrey in another clip, “I’m just really relieved and happy to be sitting here talking to you with my wife by my side because I can’t begin to imagine what it must have been like for her” — referring to his mother, Princess Diana — “going through this process by herself all those years ago.”

Diana also eventually broke with the monarchy and parlayed her fame to helping a number of charities, including those focused on the AIDS crisis, homelessness, and land minds.

Oprah With Meghan and Harry airs on CBS on Sunday, March 7, 2021 at 8PM ET.
