Saturday Night Live fans are cooking up their own plans for the latest star of the 2020 presidential election: the fly from last night’s vice presidential debate. When Senator Kamala Harris and Vice President Mike Pence took the stage last night to face off on the year’s biggest issues, a viral moment was born when a housefly planted itself on Pence’s head and hung out there for a little while without the vice president taking notice.
Now, SNL fans anticipating this weekend’s political cold open are begging for the show to cast Jeff Goldblum as the persistent little insect, Entertainment Tonight reports. While we’ve come to know Goldblum from his roles in films like Jurassic Park or The Grand Budapest Hotel, his resume has one key film that’s making him the perfect casting choice in fans’ eyes. Back in 1986, the actor played a scientist whose experiment goes wrong in The Fly, a drama in which he morphs into a housefly.
Calls for Goldblum to play the part on SNL this weekend spread across Twitter today, with one user writing, “If SNL doesn’t get Jeff Goldblum to be the fly, they will have failed.” Another added, “If Jeff Goldblum isn’t playing the fly on SNL this weekend then you all should just give up on this season.”
While Goldblum himself hasn’t chimed in, and neither has anyone from SNL, we’ve still got a few days until this Saturday’s show, which will be hosted by comedian Bill Burr. The musical guest for the Oct. 10 episode is still a mystery after Morgan Wallen, the country singer previously scheduled to perform on this weekend’s show, was dropped by SNL after he was spotted partying maskless in Alabama last weekend.
