Animation was already a prized possession for streamers like Netflix, Hulu, and Amazon, but in a world strained by the COVID-19 pandemic, series and films that don’t require live-action actors are set to play an even greater role in our entertainment future.
In this challenging new paradigm, could Invincible become one of the great new superhero franchises? That’s the hope.
Based on the comic by Robert Kirkman (The Walking Dead), the animated series aimed at adults revolves around 17-year-old Mark Grayson, whose dad is most powerful superhero on the planet, Omni-Man. As Mark starts aging into adulthood, his powers — super strength, speed, healing, and flight — begin to manifest.
The teaser gives fans a taste of the full-blown fantasy, and the hard-R take on violence. Considering the show is produced by Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg, who are currently producing The Boys on Amazon, the over-the-top approach should be no surprise.
The voice cast for Invincible is stacked, with Steven Yeun as Mark, J.K. Simmons as Omni-Man, and Zazie Beetz, Walton Goggins, Chris Diamantopolous, Gillian Jacobs, Jason Mantzoukas, and Mark Hamill rounding out the cast. Kirkman also announced that Star Trek: The Next Generation actor Michael Dorn will also play fan favorite character Battle Beast.
The show is set to premiere in 2021.
