With films such a Bad Boys Forever, Knives Out, The Way Back and 21 Bridged Onwards on offer, Bahrain now has a variety of entertainment as it got its first drive-in theatre with India’s Mukta A2 Cinemas joining hands with event managment company PICO for the purpose. Located at the iconic Bahrain Bay, the drive-in cinemas offer the experience of watching movies alongside food, snacks and drinks - and all of it while adhering to social distancing rules that is the need of the hour, given the coronavirus pandemic.

Safety measures

To ensure safety of patrons and the service providers, tickets are available for online sale alone and each ticket package includes a food and beverage combo of which offers snacks like popcorn or nachos and colas. Under two different packages, a maximum of four people are allowed in a single car. Additional food and beverages can be had, on request, and will be delivered, keeping in mind the safety measures.

How do drive-in theaters work?

Movies’ soundtracks are played through on a dedicated radio channel which can be heard on the car stereos of customers. Along with series of film nights, there will be stand-up shows, live music events, special performances etc. before the actual movie screening at Bahrain Bay. Added menu options with gourmet offerings like hotdogs, burgers, nachos, pizza etc. will also be offered.

Talking about the difference of a drive-in theater compared to a conventional, closed theater MD Mukta A2 Cinemas Rahul Puri said, “Traditional bricks and mortar overheads are replaced with outdoor related challenges. F&B (food and beverages) is at the very forefront of the business model for a Drive-In, computing to almost 60% of gross revenues. Workforce required for a Drive-In is much higher in comparison to traditional cinemas, mainly because of the landmass that needs to be covered for the operations. Sound is transmitted through an FM frequency so guests can enjoy the sound from their car. Traditional cinemas are dark spaces whereas a drive-in cinema could have a certain amount of ambient light. Cinema projection needs to be amped up by having a high lumen projector, long throw lens and high resolution. Day light LEDs on cars need to be provided covers for better projection brightness on the screen.”

“Profitability is centered on F&B. A strategic partnership such as ours with the event management company PICO Group is essential, wherein both parties brought in their infrastructure and operations.,” he added.

Akshay Bajaj, Business Head Mukta A2 Cinemas Bahrain said, "Mukta A2 Cinemas is proud to launch Drive-in BH, a brand that is much more than a nostalgic idea or retro way to see movies. It is a first-of-its-kind entertainment destination. People are looking for safe and quality experiences and drive-in cinemas are the perfect destination to keep them connected to the movies in these times."

Bahrain’s Minister of Industry, Trade and Tourism Zayed Al Zayani inaugurated the drive-in cinemas and described the new venture as a “necessity to cope with these exceptional circumstances facing economy in general.”
